Introduction
Cochlear implantation is a surgical procedure, which can assist children and adults with significant sensorineural (permanent) hearing loss who cannot obtain benefit from conventional hearing aids.
Cochlear implant consists of
1. The internal implant: this part consists of an electronic package and magnet that is placed in the temporal bone after doing a mastoidectomy and an electrode array that is placed inside the cochlea.
2. The external part: this consists of a microphone, cables, coil and a speech processor.
Patient selection criteria
Children Prelingual totally deaf and profound deaf and post lingual crossovers (age from one year onward)
Adults-post lingual crossovers (who have been using hearing aid)

*Indigenous cochlear implant research is ongoing (MORD) under the guidance of Mr. Abdul Kalam; soon it may be produced in India at a cost of 1-2 Lakhs only. Hopefully it will change lot of people\’s life.
